I have great pleasure in presenting this week’s guest post on Olga Núñez Miret, a very talented author. I am always amazed that she finds the time to do everything she does.
1. Please tell us something about yourself.
I was born many years back (half a century already, can you believe it?) in Barcelona, Spain. A great place that’s come into its own in the last few years (I’ve always loved it, but it’s good to know other people share in it too).
I was born a reader, for what my parents tell me, and even before I learned to read I was fascinated by the written word. I was a good student, very conscientious, but was terrible when participating in things like team sports. I studied Medicine but had problems finding a training post in psychiatry and moved to the UK in the early 1990s (shortly after the Olympic Games in Barcelona).
I trained in psychiatry and worked in psychiatry (both for the National Health Service and the private sector in the UK) for quite a few years, but got slightly distracted by my love of books and then I studied a BA in American Literature (that included a year in the USA, at Mount Holyoke College), then a PhD, then I went back to work in psychiatry (forensic psychiatry) and recently also completed a Masters in Criminology. After quite a few years working in psychiatry I decided I needed a bit of time to rethink things and left my job, hoping to explore other things.
At the moment, I’m writing my books and translating books for others (English Spanish/Spanish-English).
Despite my limited skills, I love fitness regimes and I’m at the moment addicted to You Tube exercising videos. I love walking, and living in Yorkshire (Penistone, yes, the greatest name ever!) I have plenty of opportunity.
I have no kids or pets but love owls, and cats and wild birds visit my garden quite often.
2. When did you know that you wanted to be an author?
I’ve always loved reading and books. I started writing, fairy-tales kind of stories, when I was very young, and I carried on. I decided to go back to university and study American Literature, in Sussex, I took an evening writing course and got back to writing, initially short stories, and then longer stuff. I never made much of a concerted effort to publish them though, until 2012, after a health scare, when I realised that just trusting I’d have time later might not be very realistic.
3. What conditions do you need in order to write?
If I’m “in the zone”, I can pretty much write anywhere. I write fast (often it might not be very good, but the important thing is to keep the flow going). I prefer to be in a quiet place and living alone that is pretty easy. Now I’m installed in my kitchen as it overlooks the garden and a farm and it’s quite sedate (I also have easy access to drinks and it’s one of the biggest rooms in the house, so I have the big table to spread notes around).
Due to family health matters I’ve spent quite a bit of time at my parents’ recently, and although not ideal, when I’m in the middle of a story, I can keep going.
I will usually carry a notebook with me wherever I go, as a good idea (or any idea) can strike anywhere.
4. Please share your books with us and a synopsis of each.
I publish my books in Spanish and English at the same time and I have 6 published in each. The Man Who Never Was, was the first novel I published and it’s a quirky family saga that owes much to Magic Realism. We follow the main character, Jesús, from birth. He’s very ugly and never knows who his father was. Very strange things happen around him, some rather funny and it is a bit of a crazy soap opera.
Twin Evils? is a YA novella about a pair of twins, a boy and a girl, Max and Ruth, who are the complete opposites and hate each other, and that causes a tragedy. It has something of the fairy tale about it.
In Escaping Psychiatry I collected three stories I had written that had as protagonist Mary, a psychiatrist/writer whose skills are called upon on a number of cases. The three stories (‘Cannon Fodder’, ‘Teamwork’ and ‘Memory’) are quite different, but they all fall within the general category of psychological thriller. Mary learns a lot about herself through her adventures and I’m planning on further adventures with her as a protagonist.
Click Me Happy! is a romantic story about a social-media averse librarian who gets pushed into that world and meets a very interesting (and attractive) writer/ painter on-line. It has three endings to choose from, an unhappy, a neutral and a happy one, so it’s up to the readers to decide.
Family, Lust and Cameras is a novella I wrote a while back but decided to update it, as sharing personal information and cameras are everywhere these days, even more than when I wrote the story. It’s a dark thriller, a story about obsession, voyeurism and revenge. Short and sharp.
I Love Your Cupcakes is a sweet romance set in the world of TV baking competitions. After being a failure at everything she had try to do, the main protagonist, Dulce, spurred on by her friend Adelfa, decides to try baking for a living and they all end up taking part in a TV cookery competition. And, of course, they find love. I hope it puts a smile on people’s faces. I really enjoyed writing it.
5. How do you come up with ideas for your stories?
That varies. Sometimes I might read or hear something (in the news, in a blog…), sometimes I observe something… I’m very much of the school of ‘what if’ and that drives a lot of my short stories, and also longer ones.
I always find that going for a walk or a drive gets my imagination flowing. That’s why I try to always have something to write on. Although I might have a lot of ideas, only those that refuse to leave me and keep coming back usually end up making it into a story.
6. What projects are you currently working on?
I wrote the first book in a YA trilogy called Angelic Business about four years ago. It has a touch of the paranormal, supernatural, with angels and demons interfering with the life of a pretty normal girl, or so she thinks. I started publishing my other books and I would go back and work on the series every so often. Eventually, last year I participated in NaNoWriMo and I saw it as the perfect opportunity to write the draft of the third novel of the series. (What Olga doesn’t tell you, she won the NaNoWriMo Competition – K J Rollinson)
Since then I’ve been working on editing, rewriting and translating the three books and now they’re available for pre-sale.
Angelic Business 2. Shapes of Greg will be published on the 15th of July.
The last one, Angelic Business 3. Pink, Angel or Demon? will see the light on the 30th. At the moment I’m trying to ensure everything is ready for their publication.
I have a few ideas for other books (some are further adventures for characters in Escaping Psychiatry and I Love Your Cupcakes), others, some unfinished books, and ideas for completely different things (there’s a thriller that keeps popping up into my head but not sure exactly what form it would take or if it could be attached to the Escaping Psychiatry characters). I also have some finished books that I’ve published in Wattpad only and I’m thinking about revising and looking into publishing more widely.
7. Is there anything else you would like to share with us.
I know it’s become a cliché, but not any less true for that. Life is too short and we have no idea how much time we’ll have. So, as much as possible, pursue your dreams and invest your time in the things that really matter. I attended a course on Mindfulness and I must admit that trying to meditate and focus can bring clarity to the mind.
If you’re thinking of learning a language, I started German in Duolingo and it helps keep the mind going.
